“Come From Away” And Nearby To Experience Marriott’s Fabulous Production
Chicago Marriott Theater’s well-directed, stellar production of “Come From Away” is a tribute to the human spirit and those ordinary yet extraordinary heroes of 9/11. As we remember with sadness the 25th anniversary of the horrific attacks on our nation, let us also recall the unity of mankind. “Be anxious for nothing” – we are reminded in this show of this verse as a universal language; my sister also often quotes Philippians 4:6a when we find ourselves under stress. I can only imagine the burden these people felt in the air and then on the ground as the planes made emergency landings in Gander, Newfoundland. This incredibly powerful musical shows us what faith and kindness can do.
As always, this amazing theater brings us a unique musical, finely helmed by Jessica Fisch. The band and vocals are first-rate, the acting top-notch. The entire cast is talented and very believable. Scenes depicting an African couple exiting a shuttle bus with a Bible in hand, and the modesty of a Muslim gentleman both are very ardent and passionate. “Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace” (the prayer of St. Francis) is one of the most moving and beautiful songs I have ever heard onstage. The revolving theater-in-the-round stage showcases the hymn as “Prayer” to its full advantage: God is watching over us all, no matter what faith we practice, and will lead us out of the darkness.
Comic timing is spot-on – big laugh moments especially surrounding Irish whiskey and kissing a fish are well timed and hilarious. Intense dramatic moments tug at our heartstrings and make us want to hold our loved ones close to our hearts. The choreography is exceptionally excellent and costumes very realistic. I especially loved the ingenious use of suitcases as seats. The simple minimalist set makes clever use of lighting and moveable stairs, breaking the fourth wall with ease.
Michael Earvin Martin gives a flawless performance in his various roles, very credible and humourous. As the Pepsi drinking mayor Claude and others, Alex Goodrich is marvelous, full of stage presence and a pleasure to watch. As an animal lover I really enjoyed the SPCA worker Bonnie, as played splendidly by Sarah Bockel, with her segments dedicated to the furry friends that were aboard the grounded planes – her characterization is incredibly well done.
The Kevin’s are brought to life delightfully by Devin DeSantis and Jonathan Shaboo. Sharriese Hamilton plays Hannah, the mom awaiting word on her NYC firefighter son while lighting candles in a Catholic church, with complete aplomb and strength. In the role of Beulah is Denise Devlin – she gives a very notable performance, including telling a corny joke with zeal. Madison Kauffman, Justin Albinder, Lexie Dorsett Sharp, Matt Crowley, and Heidi Kettenring each bring bring resplendent individuality to the characters they portray.
