“The Snow Queen”

***** Over the years I have been witness to many variations and adaptations of Hans Christian Anderson’s “ The Snow Queen “. This is the “coming of age” story that inspired the Disney animated film “Frozen”. For many year’s Victory Gardens did a spectacular puppet and people production that conveyed the message that we can overcome any obstacle if we persevere.

The five actor cast, sharply directed by Landree Fleming with choreography by Katie Johannigman is slick and allows the story to be told in just around 60 minutes ( perfect for little theater audiences). Each actor plays several roles with the exception of Joryhebal Ginirio who plays the heroine Gerda. Her best fry Kai (Jeremiah Alsop) is taken by the Snow Queen ( deftly handled by Alanna Chavez) to her palace.

Gerda does all she can to rescue her friend staving off many obstacles along the way. She meets many flowers and animals along the way, each standing in her way

In spite of all the obstacles played by Alsop, Chavez and Caron Buinis ( grandma, lady crow wise woman and witch) and the incredible Ryan Stajmiger (troll, crow, reindeer and rose) all with a great comic flair.

This cast may be small in numbers, but is huge in talent.

The music (directed by Michael Mahler) is lively rock that truly helps move the story. As usual I asked a young person to assist with the review. This gives you the viewpoint of a 9 year old. Here is what Tyler had to say.

” I loved the show! The energy was terrific and watching the story show that Friendship and love are important made me feel great!

During the Q and A with the cast, I was able to ask a questions about the changes of costumes (there were so many). I learned a little about quick changes and how the tech crew is involved. I truly enjoyed watching this play”.

What is neat about Marriott is that when the non-existent curtain falls, the cast takes the stage, introduces the cast and crew and answers audience questions. How great is that?
