The Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences Presents 'The Emperor’s New Clothes'

The Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences brings one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most treasured stories to life this spring in the musical The Emperor’s New Clothes. While the weather outside may still be unpredictable, we know the Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences will deliver an amazing, one-hour performance indoors that is perfect for the entire family to enjoy. My seven-year-old son made his second visit to the Marriott Theatre this week, and invited his grandma and grandpa with him to take in the fun this time. We all loved being greeted by the friendly ushers, the beautiful set design, and the theatre-in-the-round stage which made us feel right at home. With a one-hour show awaiting us, we were very excited to see the season premier of The Emperor’s New Clothes!

Future emperor Marcus the Third is not sure he’s ready to take over the throne of his city at age 14. He convinces himself that he can finally gain the confidence it takes to be an emperor if he dresses in the right clothes. Soon a swindler aims to take advantage of Marcus’ immaturity and inability to make important decisions, and Marcus is promised magic clothes that “are invisible to fools, liars, and anyone you should ignore” for many hefty demands. But leave it to Arno, the mop boy who is invisible to most, to help Marcus learn a valuable lesson and find a way out of the mess he created.

The Emperor’s New Clothes kept us engaged from start to finish. The cast, many of whom played multiple roles in the performance, knew exactly how to relate to their audience. Between the singing, live orchestra music, lights, set design, and hand-tailored costumes, we truly were entertained throughout the entire hour-long performance. It was a great way for us to kick of the spring season, and the 10:00 a.m. showtime is perfect for families with young children.

When visiting the Marriott Theatre, be sure to stay for the live question and answer session with the cast after the show. With reviews like “It was awesome” from a seven-year-old boy and “the actors were fantastic” and “the theatre-in-round style was the perfect complement to the beautiful set design, music and actors” from Grandma and Grandpa, we all agree this is a show you don’t want to miss this spring. Our favorite parts of the show included the singing, the interaction between Marcus and Arno the mop boy, and the message the production sends to young audiences.

Our family always looks forward to visiting the Marriott Theatre and we are excited to see more shows in 2018, especially Shrek the Musical which starts in early October! With such high quality shows and a great lineup for families, the Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences in Lincolnshire is a cherished Lake County institution. I am excited to share our experience with my friends and family and let them know that the The Emperor’s New Clothes is a great fit for theatregoers of all ages.
