“A Little Night Music” Is A Lot Of Entertainment…
Once again, the Marriott Theater Lincolnshire brings us fabulous musical theater in the round with excellent vocals and instrumentals. As a teen, having seen Dixie Carter perform the lead role of Desiree, I expected great things from this show, and as always the Marriott does not disappoint. “A Little Night Music” excels with exceptional melodic exuberance – the score by Steven Sondheim is spell binding and haunting. The showstopping classic “Send in the Clowns” is beautifully sung by Alexandra Silber – very heartfelt.
Comic timing is impeccable and the entire cast is exceptionally talented. Chicago favorite and Jeff award winning Veronica Garza as the Countess is hysterical and full of stage presence. Ms. Garza gives another flawless performance, as we have come to expect from such a fine actress – she is absolutely gorgeous in her regal yet humorous role.
Soon to be minister Henrik (played wittily by Eldon Warner-Soriano) delivers a very credible performance – believable and strong, he is delightful to watch. His stepmother, the young virginal wife Anne is adorable, well portrayed by the very pretty Addie Morales. Grandmother Madame Armfeldt is wonderfully, sagely brought to life by Carmen Roman. Her granddaughter (characterized charmingly by Olivia Grace O’Sullivan) is splendid as the precocious, wise beyond her years daughter of Desiree. And Victoria Okafor has a lovely singing voice, looking amazing onstage.
I especially loved the sets and props, elegant and pretty. Miniature chandeliers and a round Chinese lantern sun/moon are lovely. The dinner scene has beautiful candelabras and colorful cushions, the food looking scrumptious and upscale. I simply can’t say enough good things about the costumes – they are stunning, appropriate, and delightful.
This bunch of unique characters together point out that marriage is never easy, especially for women. A weekend in the country is eye opening for everyone involved, but the players don’t seem to suffer any consequences for their immoral activity, or do they? “But where are the clowns? Quick, send in the clowns- Don’t bothеr, they’re herе…” The audience loved the happy ending, celebrating it with thunderous applause.
